| | Ol' Rusty Hauler (13th May 09 at 4:02pm UTC) | | I picked up this trailer for $700 it was usable but ugly as hell, had a couple things wrong with it a cracked weld or two since the guy that built it wasnt the best welder but all in all it did work.....

gotta love the old auto parts store billboards!!!

So if I was building a patina rat rod I may have left it alone but.....Im not so plan was to cut a few nasty looking things off like the wheel wells the lame ramps that stood up (I'll take a pics later you may enjoy the oakey engineering on em' for a laugh) fix a few welds re wire it and change the decking in the center but like all other projects once you start into it you start shaking your head at it and tear it all down and I ended up with a couple of bent frame rails and a lot of grinding to be had

| | Re: Ol' Rusty Hauler (13th May 09 at 4:13pm UTC) | | heres is a pic of the guys work he narrowed the thing 4 inches why I dont know but hey

My plan was to widen it 6 inches now that it is this far apart and make it 82 inches wide so my tires will be about right on the edge instead of hanging over a tad bit, It is also recieving a serious diet loosing a shit ton of uneeded crossmembers like those almost 16 foot long shelving steel things that were barely tacked in riding between the two layers of angle iron, Im using 3/16" 2" in angle and 3" channel for the new crossmembers

| | Re: Ol' Rusty Hauler (13th May 09 at 4:25pm UTC) | | Im doing this cuz Im a broke ass and at the moment so I dont have the money for a newbie....The entire thing including the cost of the trailer will be just under $1100 not to bad considering what I have seen out there for used ones at $1500 plus, it definatly would have been nice to start with new metal as these old frame rails were tweaked pretty good but again oh well, they are definatly a lot more straight now than they were here are pics of the progress

New Hitch!

I built and new tongue and notched it into the deck 2 inches since Im lowering it 2 inches and it did ride level loaded before

Thats all off to buy more wire for the welder and a few more peices of metal today to build the tracks for the ramps etc etc

finished the tounge

drilled new holes and cut the mounts down

Hopefully I'll get the axles done this weekend its my week with my son so I don't get a chance to do much in the driveway until next week, can't wait until I can get him out there to work on things instead of just beating on them with a wrench....lol
