I picked up this trailer for $700 it was usable but ugly as hell, had a couple things wrong with it a cracked weld or two since the guy that built it wasnt the best welder but all in all it did work.....

gotta love the old auto parts store billboards!!!

So if I was building a patina rat rod I may have left it alone but.....Im not so plan was to cut a few nasty looking things off like the wheel wells the lame ramps that stood up (I'll take a pics later you may enjoy the oakey engineering on em' for a laugh) fix a few welds re wire it and change the decking in the center but like all other projects once you start into it you start shaking your head at it and tear it all down and I ended up with a couple of bent frame rails and a lot of grinding to be had

"You might be a redneck if....."
heres is a pic of the guys work he narrowed the thing 4 inches why I dont know but hey

My plan was to widen it 6 inches now that it is this far apart and make it 82 inches wide so my tires will be about right on the edge instead of hanging over a tad bit, It is also recieving a serious diet loosing a shit ton of uneeded crossmembers like those almost 16 foot long shelving steel things that were barely tacked in riding between the two layers of angle iron, Im using 3/16" 2" in angle and 3" channel for the new crossmembers
"You might be a redneck if....."
ok ok maybe but have you seen your side yard come on....lol :fake: you got one of these too buddy just need to get it done
Im doing this cuz Im a broke ass and at the moment so I dont have the money for a newbie....The entire thing including the cost of the trailer will be just under $1100 not to bad considering what I have seen out there for used ones at $1500 plus, it definatly would have been nice to start with new metal as these old frame rails were tweaked pretty good but again oh well, they are definatly a lot more straight now than they were here are pics of the progress

Thats all off to buy more wire for the welder and a few more peices of metal today to build the tracks for the ramps etc etc
dont mind the dent in my new truck the damn storage bin door at work on my last couple of days there caught wind and blew into my truck but there paying for it, its going in the body shop next monday
Dude, that will never work, its upside down :fake:
So what are you reusing off the old $700 trailer? The VIN tag?
2 5200 lb Axles, Springs, 60ft of 5 in channel, at first it was to change a few crossmembers and the deck and it turned into a complete overhaul but hey it happens, I guess I got the VIN and plate out of it too!!! not like it matters but.....next time if there is one will be all new metal and axles for only about 500 more and probably less time but again it happens
you are a very determined man!
If I was only as determined on the stupid chevy in the garage it might be done and sold already and out of my lifeand the rig feels crammed in there anyway needs more room
So take your ADD pills and finish something
got some work done on it here are some pics.....
finished the tounge

Hopefully I'll get the axles done this weekend its my week with my son so I don't get a chance to do much in the driveway until next week, can't wait until I can get him out there to work on things instead of just beating on them with a wrench....lol
good thing you have that lock on it.
good thing you have that lock on it.
lol hey times are tough you never know...yeah thanks ass its not even on there now I was seeing which one would fit the old one was funky and wouldnt fit any of the different size locks I had..... :flipoff:
painted wired and ready to go pick up the wood for itthe taillights on the back are temporary I havent cut the holes for the flush mounted ones yet.... still need to put the wood on, get 8 feet more wire for the trailer brakes since I didnt order enough came about a foot short of going across to the other brake I was a little pissed....build wheel wells and ramps, mount the jack and need to buy a tool box, a harbor freight winch and fairlead on the cheap for the tongue, going to get the wood in a few hrs after I mount the tires.... here are pics

looks good. Why brakes on only one axle?
it only had brakes on one when I bought it when I get a little extra cash Im gonna freshn up the pair I have and add them to the other axle also, they work but I disconnected them when I went thru them and the wheel bearings today one of the springs on the driver side brake broke......
pulled it around a little today and picked up wood and some stain for the wood, it pulls perfect it feels lighter than it use to, it might be because I moved one of the mounts because it was off too so it tracks better the tires dont kick in anymore since I put the bow back in the axles (when the guy narrowed them he welded them together straight) and the fact that I cut a shit ton of junk un-needed metal out of it.... and its way stronger than it use to bethe deck is 82" now and I put the 4 inches back in the axles the guy cut out it is 1 inch under max legal width on the tires..... Im super happy with the way it pulls cant wait to get all the finishing touches on it done!!! :kranker:
Yep your welcome for the 8" of axle bar (2- 4" pieces actually) and all the great do and dont's since my trailer was built first....oh yeah and thanks for helping me with the wood deck by that time I was running low on energy.....
oh one more thing your trailer looks killer......like mine only a little smaller![]()

looks like new!
Killer! Other than the size of the channel it looks damn familiar, Nice Job!! I should take some pics of mine too.......I geuss I will just do a build thread on the jeep chassis.....
Thanks! I got what I wanted a multi purpose flat bed trailer instead of an ugly ass car hauler only... did what I need to do for my use.... stretched the tounge to fit a box up front moved the jack so I can open the tailgate when the trailer is hooked up and lowered it a couple inches even though I wish it was still a few more inches lower.... best part is its now wide enough to where my truck just barely fits without the tires hanging over the sides now!!! Im still gonna add a few more d rings and stake holes on the sides possibly a step on each side in front of the tires too when I do the wheel wells, so it still has a few things to be done but I finally feel accomplished on the thing, time to work on the rig nowI cant decide what to do with the wheel wells thinking of a tube frame and cover it in sheetmetal or pie cutting some angle iron to bend to the shape I want to make a frame, something that can be driven on so when I go full width I dont kill the fenders
sealer works good
I need to do that to my trailer. What brand sealer is that? Do you spray it on?
Olympic from Lowes PPG makes it, The old man at the trailer supply recommended it, Rob put boiled lin seed oil on his I like the way his turned out too.... I used a foam roller and just rolled it on did all sides before putting the deck on, I got a cedar tone sealer it comes in that clear or redwood color
