ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS (27th May 08 at 2:38am UTC)
welp... Yet again, another great 105 amp NEW alternator went on the rig this weekend...

I just put this one on from the hammerz trip and it lasted up until my run to buck on friday morning. watched my amps, slowly drop and drop.

So WTF is wrong with this thing. This is my probably 10th alternator. The last one lasted over a year, with probably 7-8 trips on it. worked great. got a new one. and lasted maybe 10 hours. Im pissed!

Do you people think im just running her at full speed ahead and it dies quick. Should i think about getting a 140-200 amp. If i do have some wireing screwed up how do i find which component it is? I need a good wiring guy to help me out.. I'll buy beer of your choice!!!

Is running a one wire alternator an option? Thats what I ended up doing on a few of my camaro's and I was happy with them. Kranker seems to be having an alternator issue as well.....

did you ever determine which way the fan was spinning on the alt?

You could do what I do.... I usually sell the rig before the alt goes bad {Grin}

Well thats because of the ratchet strap/ adjuster thingy {Grin}

Is it internally or externally voltage regulated? Are you reuseing the same pulley each time? Whats the motor out of ? Back before I had the internet I used to have to go to the libary reference section all the time. In the automotive part they have schematics for every thing. So is it wired the same way the factory wired it?
At work when I have multiple failures of the same componet I start by looking at the last thing I or the guy who was there before me touched. Just a place to start troubleshooting from.

Its a 105 amp from a 95 camero. chevy 3 wire, power, excite and wire back to bat. I've tried the one wire ones before with no luck. Maybe i should throw an amp meter on her again and see how many amps i'm acually trying to pull.

internal reg.
same pully

taurus fan, 2 other fans, that are usually on
hella 500's, 2 tractor rock lights, msd, cd player, amp tower speakers,

I know lights arn't the issue because i never really even used them on this alt, and they were not on when i started seeing volts drop.
different smaller amp
and other than that just your random things that need to be turned on once in a while...

mean green = $369 :jerk you:

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS (27th May 08 at 5:21am UTC)
fans use up more amps than most people think. with everything that you have down i bet you are running real close to 100 amps and could be very close to if not over working your alt so i would through an meter on there and turn on everything that your usually running on a trail on and see how close to the 105 amps it is. If its around 90 or so ya might want to look into a larger alt. I would think that it could be a regulator problem but since they are internal reg alts that your running dont think that would be the case.

2 batteries? if i recall right your running right at the max amp draw for that alternator. they dont like being run like that non stop. ya either need a second battery to handle some of that load better or step up to a higher output unit. thats where your issue is. and move your tranny cooler if ya havent already. {Grin}

If you dont have the fan controller to run them at slower speeds when it is not that hot, then those fans are drawing big amps.
Why were you having trouble running a one wire alt?

The only use this alternator has seen was this trip really. No lights. Tranny fan is from a street bike, taurus fan takes about 25 constant amps to run maybe 45 to turn on, little summit heater on low, and yes I had my perko on both batteries this time... amp meter today after i get another alt. i'll keep ya updated!

Thanks B-tilton... dropping off the alt tomarrow at boyle future tech in auburn for a rewind. they say it runs about $100 for better sh!t. we'll see what happens. and im rewiring the taurus fan to run on low when i need it, instead of turning it on and off all the time... you would think after 7 years of wheelin this thing, i would have it dialed by now!!! :jerk you:
