ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By VERTIGO (vertigo) on 26th May 08 at 7:38pm
welp... Yet again, another great 105 amp NEW alternator went on the rig this weekend...

I just put this one on from the hammerz trip and it lasted up until my run to buck on friday morning. watched my amps, slowly drop and drop.

So WTF is wrong with this thing. This is my probably 10th alternator. The last one lasted over a year, with probably 7-8 trips on it. worked great. got a new one. and lasted maybe 10 hours. Im pissed!

Do you people think im just running her at full speed ahead and it dies quick. Should i think about getting a 140-200 amp. If i do have some wireing screwed up how do i find which component it is? I need a good wiring guy to help me out.. I'll buy beer of your choice!!!

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By HOGAN (hogan) on 26th May 08 at 7:49pm
Is running a one wire alternator an option? Thats what I ended up doing on a few of my camaro's and I was happy with them. Kranker seems to be having an alternator issue as well.....

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By Sillyneck (sillyneck) on 26th May 08 at 7:51pm
did you ever determine which way the fan was spinning on the alt?

You could do what I do.... I usually sell the rig before the alt goes bad {Grin}

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By jiMMythejerk (jimmythejerk) on 26th May 08 at 8:07pm
Im running a mean green 160 or 180 amp 6 year old alt. its doing just fine!!!!!!

Well thats because of the ratchet strap/ adjuster thingy {Grin}

Is it internally or externally voltage regulated? Are you reuseing the same pulley each time? Whats the motor out of ? Back before I had the internet I used to have to go to the libary reference section all the time. In the automotive part they have schematics for every thing. So is it wired the same way the factory wired it?
At work when I have multiple failures of the same componet I start by looking at the last thing I or the guy who was there before me touched. Just a place to start troubleshooting from.

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By VERTIGO (vertigo) on 26th May 08 at 10:08pm
Its a 105 amp from a 95 camero. chevy 3 wire, power, excite and wire back to bat. I've tried the one wire ones before with no luck. Maybe i should throw an amp meter on her again and see how many amps i'm acually trying to pull.

internal reg.
same pully

taurus fan, 2 other fans, that are usually on
hella 500's, 2 tractor rock lights, msd, cd player, amp tower speakers,

I know lights arn't the issue because i never really even used them on this alt, and they were not on when i started seeing volts drop.
different smaller amp
and other than that just your random things that need to be turned on once in a while...

mean green = $369 :jerk you:

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By fuzzyz (fuzzyz) on 26th May 08 at 10:21pm
fans use up more amps than most people think. with everything that you have down i bet you are running real close to 100 amps and could be very close to if not over working your alt so i would through an meter on there and turn on everything that your usually running on a trail on and see how close to the 105 amps it is. If its around 90 or so ya might want to look into a larger alt. I would think that it could be a regulator problem but since they are internal reg alts that your running dont think that would be the case.

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By BigToy (bigtoy22) on 27th May 08 at 7:17am
2 batteries? if i recall right your running right at the max amp draw for that alternator. they dont like being run like that non stop. ya either need a second battery to handle some of that load better or step up to a higher output unit. thats where your issue is. and move your tranny cooler if ya havent already. {Grin}

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By Keith (psmurfbeotches) on 27th May 08 at 7:34am
If you dont have the fan controller to run them at slower speeds when it is not that hot, then those fans are drawing big amps.
Why were you having trouble running a one wire alt?

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By VERTIGO (vertigo) on 27th May 08 at 8:43am
The only use this alternator has seen was this trip really. No lights. Tranny fan is from a street bike, taurus fan takes about 25 constant amps to run maybe 45 to turn on, little summit heater on low, and yes I had my perko on both batteries this time... amp meter today after i get another alt. i'll keep ya updated!

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By Sillyneck (sillyneck) on 27th May 08 at 9:42am
$20 in gasoline + 1 match + a good strike = no more altenator problems. {Smile}

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By VERTIGO (vertigo) on 27th May 08 at 10:16am
Thanks B-tilton... dropping off the alt tomarrow at boyle future tech in auburn for a rewind. they say it runs about $100 for better sh!t. we'll see what happens. and im rewiring the taurus fan to run on low when i need it, instead of turning it on and off all the time... you would think after 7 years of wheelin this thing, i would have it dialed by now!!! :jerk you:

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By kranker (kranker) on 27th May 08 at 10:19am
who is going to respin that alt for you, i have one that needs to be done too {Unsure}

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By VERTIGO (vertigo) on 27th May 08 at 10:25am
boyle future technology in auburn 530-888-6290
They say they can bump up the amps from 105 - 140+ replace the rectumfier.... and check things out as to why things keep dying. dropping it off tomarrow morning. about a day turn around.

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By kranker (kranker) on 27th May 08 at 10:50am
sweet when i get paid i will look in to doing that as well. let me know how it works {Cool}

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By ghostwriter916 (ghostwriter916) on 27th May 08 at 11:27am
im glad this is a new topic. im having a serious problem getting my toyota to even turn over on its own. i put a new starter, battery, and alternator in and it ran for a few weeks and then crapped out. i noticed on the back of my new alternator that it was recommended i change my voltage reg out. so went to pick n pull and grab two off old model yotas and plugged them in. now all my gauges dont work and it doesnt turn over even close. anyone shed some light on my problem? {Shocked}

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By btilton (btilton) on 27th May 08 at 1:43pm
your first problem is its a toyota :flipoff:

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By ghostwriter916 (ghostwriter916) on 27th May 08 at 1:58pm

exo cage soon? {Grin}

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By fuzzyz (fuzzyz) on 27th May 08 at 2:24pm
sounds like some grounding problems on your yota. check them out and make sure there all still there and tight. the more grounds the better!

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By ghostwriter916 (ghostwriter916) on 27th May 08 at 5:28pm
hmm yeah ive check most of my grounds and they're all good. it might just be japanse wiring thats failing on me? hahaha {Angry}

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By fuzzyz (fuzzyz) on 27th May 08 at 9:25pm
for starting issues in be mainly checking the block to body, body to frame, block to battery type grounds. if there not there put some in and odds are it will work great after that!

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By ghostwriter916 (ghostwriter916) on 28th May 08 at 9:13am
hmm ill check it out today. im getting a complete wiring harness from an 85 and doing it all myself the right way. ive noticed the guy that had it before me attemped to do some wiring and its pretty shity. hopefully i can get her going again riding my bicycle to work every day is a biatch {Grin}

WAIT.... are you sure it has Japanese fuses in it? Cause if they're chinese fuses then the wires have to be backwards.

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By ghostwriter916 (ghostwriter916) on 28th May 08 at 1:26pm
i think setting fire to it might work Smiley

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By kranker (kranker) on 28th May 08 at 1:34pm

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By VERTIGO (vertigo) on 28th May 08 at 3:06pm
My Problems are solved!!!!

hopefully

got my alternator back today, rewired.

97 amps at idle
178 amps at 2000 rpm

$100

I guess in my alt. plug the excite wire i had hooked up was supposed to be the alt light so by me sending 12v to it it kept killing my regulator. switched 1 wire and....

on the road again... on the road again....!!! fuckyea! Smiley

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By kranker (kranker) on 28th May 08 at 3:10pm

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By ghostwriter916 (ghostwriter916) on 30th May 08 at 1:24pm
me and the brother were talking last night. and would my problem possibly be water damage to some of the wires?

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By kranker (kranker) on 30th May 08 at 5:23pm
has it been sitting in water {Rolleyes} if so look for the wires that are caroaded as fuck {Grin} if you have a hood fender and firewall there should not be that much water getn under the hood. {Rolleyes}

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By ghostwriter916 (ghostwriter916) on 2nd Jun 08 at 8:41am
well. i pretty much got all the new wiring harness in. just a few more small tweaks here and there and its done. i did happen to find a few extremely corroaded wires {Grin}

Re: ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS - Posted By ghostwriter916 (ghostwriter916) on 3rd Jun 08 at 9:18am
i got it all wired back up last night. the truck tried so hard to turn over but would not fire up. im gonna check the spark plugs today just to make sure they arent fried. other then that theres one wire im confused about and its right by my voltage regulator and it looks to be a ground. whee would it go?? Smiley :kranker: :kranker: :kranker: :kranker: :kranker: :kranker: :kranker: :kranker:
