Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 2nd Apr 08 at 10:02am
I started a new rig a couple months ago. I beat the shit out of my blue '83 Yota, so I wanted to build my 4runner. Some of you might remember this runner as my daily driver about 3-4 years ago. Its been sitting in my moms pasture for the last 2 years. Im hoping to get it going by June. Image IImage have a shit load of build pictures, so I will just put the highlights up

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By kranker (kranker) on 2nd Apr 08 at 10:11am
looks like a lot of work before june. are you going to run toyota sh#*t again or are you going to step it up on this one {Grin}

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 2nd Apr 08 at 10:19am
I built some new axles for it. Yes they are Toyota. Im not cool enough for fullwidth. 5.29's, Lockrite, Auburn LS, highsteer, 35's(for now), keepin it real with the single case, bla, bla, bla, Toyota crap....oh yeah, I narrowed the whole front clip 5 inches Image Image Image I also shaved the firewall to fit 38" + tires later Image

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 2nd Apr 08 at 10:29am
The frame was bent pretty bad. I built the front end square to the rear end. I had to move the frame rails 3/4" over on the front spring hanger. I did away with the stock front X member and plated the front half of the frame with 1/4" plate Image Image Image Image Image

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 2nd Apr 08 at 10:40am
This is what it looks like right now. I need to do the rear. Its on stiff springs and blocks just to match the front. Im saving up to 4link it, but for now it will get different leaves Image Image Image

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 2nd Apr 08 at 10:43am
Oh, I think it will be ready. I could slam it together, but I want her to be pretty before I smash the shit out of it.

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By kranker (kranker) on 2nd Apr 08 at 11:10am
haha so you do work fast. and it look really good. but you should have done a 4 link in the front and some 2.5 air shocks to lower that thing. {Cool} it looks tall. well hurry up and get that thing done so you can go wheeln with us soon. o yeah you need to hit me up and come check out the buggy {Grin}

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 2nd Apr 08 at 1:39pm
I want the front to settle at least 2". The rear still needs built with flater, longer springs. I clearanced the front so much to clear 37"-39" tires. Once I get my Longfields I will use these 35's for street tires. Im sure all my tube will add weight. The Half the engine is in too. That motor is my mock up motor. I hate shooting grinder sparks on my good motor. I'll come see it asap.

Bad Ass Cole!!!

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By T-CARP (admin) on 2nd Apr 08 at 10:06pm
Leaf springs{Confused} ?? Naw just kiddin! What front springs you running? 44044's or toy rears?

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By BigRob (bigrob) on 2nd Apr 08 at 10:38pm
looks good fawker! You gonna dop more wheelin with us this year? Smiley

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 2nd Apr 08 at 10:59pm
Toyota rears up front. The only reason to run 44044's is if you have a Waggoneer. Too much spring rate for me....and I like the 2" gain is aproach angle. As soon as I drag the body off this one I will do a linked up buggy
More like are you guys gonna be wheelin with me this year.j/k. I was out somewhere almost every weekend last summer. Thats the only reason I build these stupid things, to be out there having fun with you guys {Grin}

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By kranker (kranker) on 7th Apr 08 at 3:23pm
are you done yet {Cheesy} {Grin} just kidding lets see some updated pics. {Grin}

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 7th Apr 08 at 10:46pm
Its getting closer. Got all the brake lines ran and all brakes on this last weekend. I started on the rear. I want a bobbed rear, but dont want to loose my hard top or my roll up window. What to do{Confused} Make a long wheel base 4runner. Here is the rear before I started cutting Image I am going to move the axle and the wheel well back 7". Heres the 1/4 cut off Image I am also moving the inner wheel well back 7" so my tire will stuff all the way. Heres the rear of the wheel well cut off. Image I cut 7" out of the rear of the quarter pannel so I could move it back. I have to add 7" to the front and shave the gas door Image With the wheel bolted back on you can see I have to move the axle back 7". Image I have both sides cut out. I will put the body back together this weekend. Then its time to move the axle. Maybe that 4 link will be sooner than I thought. {Grin}

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By kodizzle (kodizzle) on 27th Jun 08 at 7:06pm
and might i add those tires look pretty sexy. how they workin?

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 27th Jun 08 at 9:01pm
Tires are good. They only have about 6000 miles on them. 1000 of that is from the runner and the other 5 is from the last rig. Those will be my street tires. As soon as the lonfields are in its 37"-38" time

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By kodizzle (kodizzle) on 27th Jun 08 at 9:43pm
hey any parts you need give me a call and i'll see what i can do i got a pretty good hookup on toyota stuff now, pm me i'll let you know.

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 22nd Nov 08 at 10:19am
awww, your going to make me blush. Thank you.

I need to update my build up. Lots of new shit. 30 splines up front, another t case and addapter, 36"SXs. I lowered it too. Frame is 24" from the ground with 28 psi in my 36's. This winter it will get a cage. No Exo because they are fawking ugly and make your shit a foot wider. I will crush the body around an internal. Image

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By DAN FRAN SISCO (thehooskerdeally) on 9th Dec 08 at 7:47pm
I have a bunch of spare parts to if you need some

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 12th Dec 08 at 12:28am
Well, I just picked up a new front axle. I scored it at pick n pull. No, its not a 60 or a lame ass 44. Its from a 1989 Toyota FJ62(Land Cruiser). From the knuckle out these axles are the same as the mini-truck axles, except the brakes are bigger. The main reason I want this axle is for the 9.5" ring gear. Thats 1/4" smaller than a Dana 60 and 1" bigger than a Dana 44. This axle is also 3" wider than a truck axle. Running IFS hubs(not the wheel lockout hubs) also gives me another 3". So now I have a 61"wide Toyota axle with no wheel spacers. My Longfields will go right in. Longside shaft is the same, but I need to get a new shortside shaft. It is 2" longer. here are the two housings next to each other. Truck axle on bottom. FJ62 on topImage Here is the 9.5" third next to the trucks 8"Image Image

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By jeremyhengl (jeremyhengl) on 12th Dec 08 at 7:03pm
thats sick too bad it dosen't have the e-locker , still a score Smiley

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By T-CARP (admin) on 12th Dec 08 at 8:38pm
Wheew good thing you picked up that new axle, I know how much trouble you were having breaking ring gears all the time {Rolleyes}

I was popping pinions like toothpicks with my stickies V8 and 44 {Tongue Out}

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By bkizzle (bkizzle) on 26th Jan 09 at 3:15pm
get that cruiz axle in buddy come on......

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 31st Jan 09 at 11:56am
Well I started on the front axle. I cut the botton of the housing off to get rid of the rock anchor drain plug and give me about an inch more clearance. I know all you Dana guys are going to say im waisting my time, but i dont care.
Im plating everything back in with 5/16 plate. I wont get much done until my tax check comes in. The pinion will be pointed up about 10*, so I will cut and turn the knuckles too. Heres some pictures.

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 15th Mar 09 at 4:01pm
Im starting to work on this thing a bit. I just got my addapter to finally put a second T-case in this bitch. I cut the floor out to start on my flat belly. I am going to raise the motor and T-cases 3 inches. I still have some cutting to do to get the motor raised. Im thinking of boatsiding it too. Start the boatside right below the bottom door hinge. Im trying to convince my girlfriend that we should ditch the hard top so I can dovetail the rear about 14 inches. So all that should keep me busy for a month or two. This is what used to hang below the frame. It was about 5 inches.
Image
I cut a little bit of floor out.
Image Image
It should look like that.

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By jeremyhengl (jeremyhengl) on 16th Mar 09 at 8:21am
{Shocked} i think you cut alittle too much outa the floor

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By matt (matt) on 16th Mar 09 at 8:27am
holey floorboard! I like the clearance but thats a lot of cutting!

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By bkizzle (bkizzle) on 16th Mar 09 at 8:28am

{Shocked} i think you cut alittle too much outa the floor

thats cole for you!!!! he's not even done cutting....lol I think hes gonna boat side the rockers!!! maybe middle of the door or so down by the time hes done with the grinder....redoing body mounts etc etc should be sick when hes done..... next time I think he should just start with some sheetmetal and a pile of tubing.... thats where its gonna be in the end anyway.... get it done cole its almost april!!!!!!!! dont be like mine last year and not get it done till august

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 16th Mar 09 at 9:27am

{Shocked} i think you cut alittle too much outa the floor
No way!!. It will all make sense when I get some work done. Im doing away with the body mounts. The floor and body will be solid mounted the frame. The cage is going in before the floor gets new sheet metal too. Im doing all this so when I get the urge to loose all the body, I will already have a buggy.

And why do I need it done for April{Confused} ? Im not going to the Hammers and the snow wont melt till June. So, I will see you guys in june......and you better not be in the way, i'll drive over your ass {Kiss}

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By bkizzle (bkizzle) on 16th Mar 09 at 10:35am
No Im saying its almost april cause I want to make sure your done by june.....lol but you dont work right now so your good git-r-dun buddy!!!

any updates {Grin}

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 3rd Apr 09 at 2:49pm
Not really. School and work eat up most of my week. I have the dual cases in. Im waiting on parts to get here from Marlin and Front Range Off Road.

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 27th Apr 09 at 8:49am
Alright folks, I did a little work on my pos this weekend. I plated the inside and bottom of my frame from the front shackle to the rear spring hanger with 4" 3/8 angle iron. No more landing on the stock 1/8" frame rails or getting hung up on my rear spring hanger. Image
I also finnished my t cace X member. I used 2" 1/4 wall box tube and the center ring from Front Range Off Road. The bushings are for a Toyota leaf spring. Way beefier than FROR's $300 X member. Oh yeah, I have $80 into it total. Image Image
So now my motor and tranny are mounted. I still have to weld all the 3/8s stuff with Scotts welder. The little 115v lincoln im using wont do it. I have 1 more X member to add to the frame that will eventualy have link mounts attatched to. Im almost ready to put the floor back in. Image Once I have everything back together I will start on the belly pan :boobs:

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By bkizzle (bkizzle) on 27th Apr 09 at 1:26pm
looks good :homo: would look better once that floors in! you need to tow it over and weld the 3/8 on before the floor goes in !!! :boobs: bender bender bender I need a damn bender so I can cage mine this year too!!! and you know your needing it too buddy, once the house closes escrow and I have a few duckets I need to get me one of them'ns :thumbsup:

how much weight did the 3/8 angle add{Confused} ?? those were like 80 pounds a piece in full legth in the side yard :fake: now you can surf over anything without denting that frame

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By jeremyhengl (jeremyhengl) on 27th Apr 09 at 11:27pm
looks sweet make sure you have spring bushing motor mounts with that tranny mounts otherwise you end up crackingthe case around the bolts , and if you dont have them , Rockstomper.com has em 75 bucks a set thats cheaper than stock {Grin}

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 28th Apr 09 at 6:50am
I was going to make some motor mounts like that, but never did. Does it break the case because the stock motor mounts are softer?

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By matt (matt) on 28th Apr 09 at 8:33am
Yes it can break the tcase/tranny because the stock motor mounts are to soft and they flex and the solid crossmember doesn't allow the tcase/tranny to move. I bought a set of motor mounts from rockstomper after going to a tcase crossmember like yours. $75 for the pair and like Hengl said thats cheaper than stock. Only issue is I get more vibrations at idle. I like it now because the motor/tcase/tranny don't move at all very solid!

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By btilton (btilton) on 28th Apr 09 at 1:07pm

Re: Coles 4runner - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 3rd May 09 at 6:16pm
Well kids, I have made a tough choice this weekend ...The 4runner will no longer be a 4runner. Im removing all the body. As of now it needs bumpers, sliders, a cage and a floor. Im not going to try and do all that and keep the beat up toyota body. Im going to the dark side and tubing it all and having a bad ass buggy. I know its late in the year to decide this, but thats how it has to be. I also have alot of other stuff going on in my life right now that im sad to say are more important than beating up my 4runner. I quit smoking the chiva to get a good job and handle some shit. I might not be wheeling the first half of the season, but I will be back in full force once its done. I will still be on the trail all season, just not in the 'runner(I have another yota that my axles will bolt right into {Grin} , but I have to drive nice in it).
