check engine light (12th Jan 09 at 1:30am UTC)
The check engine light keeps comming on and off in my cruiser. It has a stock TBI 350 in it. When it comes on its usually at idle or under a load. When I rev it up, the light usually goes out. No I dont have a code reader, I wish I did. Ideas....? O2 sensor maybe? I hate to throw money at it when I dont know the problem. By the way, it runs normal with the light on or off.

most places will pull codes for free, ie.. napa-kragen, maybe local shop

Actually the light is supposed to stay on even after the problem goes away. Once it has 7 good starts in a row, the light goes off. no light=no code. Thats why Im asking my question because it goes on and off within minutes. DUMBASS! :flipoff:

OK, I think I got it. I checked the timing and it was pretty far off. I set it at 4 with the brown connector unplugged. It was at 12! Then I cleared all the codes by unplugging the battery for 30sec. I jumped pins A and B on the obd reader plug and it had no present codes after I reset it and ran the motor for a while. I'll drive it to work tonight and see if the light comes back on.

I think stock TBI is suppose to be set at zero with the brown wire unplugged. I could be wrong though.

Yea, its supposed to be at 0, but I read a few articles that 4-6 will wake it up. As long as I dont get spark knock, I should be fine. I drove it to work last night, beating it the entire way there. No light yet. This weekend will be the final test. Towing the little trailer up to the snow with all my gear.
