I'm building up my budget build 89' xj. I know, know. Why an xj? dont worry about that, it's what I'm doing.
So, I might be gettin a killer deal on a bunch of long arms and stuff to do a three link long-arm front and 4 link long-arm rear. There is no way I am going to go to all the trouble to convert the weak rear d35 to a coil set up so I'm going to have to get my hands on a different/ stronger rear axle. ultimatly I would like to replace the front d30 with something stronger as well but $$$/lack there of might sop that from happening right away.
My question: Why full widths? I see alot of guys doing it, and i'm interested. But what are the pros and cons?
What axles would you recomend to a guy on a budget to run? I plan to stretch the wheel base closer to 110" and comp cut the rear.
I look forward to your wise words of advice.![]()
well full width is nice and stabale and looks alot coolerbut if its your everyday driver you might want to look into getting a set of waggy dana 44s. and if you dont plan on running 42s anytime soon thats what i would look for. dana 44s can be built pretty dam tuff too. You should also be able to get a pretty good deal on a set thats already built. just my two pennies but i am sure more will chime in!
There is no such thing as a budget when it comes to building a rig. Being a youngster, I'd probably decide on a tire size you want. If this is your DD and your on a college budget I dont see you running 40-42 on fullwiths linked @ 110' on a budget. I like to think my rig is a decent example of baby stepping but still getting the job done. I ran my TJ with stock suspension, on 2 inch spacers on 35's and beat the hell out of it granted its a rubicon so I had lockers from the get go. Its my DD and has been since I bought it so big plans are on hold till another vehicle is in the mix. it is now riding on a RE long arm kit with 36's, a minimal 3 inch lift and getting it harder than ever but anyways, a 110' wheelbase will suck with tiny tires, bigger tires mean lower gears and upgraded axles, the stock axles aren't worth the effort or $$$$ of fixing up. A big lift will require a SYE kit, also a 110 WB means relocating the gas tank. Just plan ahead. We all know what we want and can always acheive what we want it just depends on the route we chose to get there. Not trying to steer you away from anything just put some thought into downtime and unexpected expenses. Check out my build thread and see what I have done over the years from stock to what it is today....

fullwidth was great when drinking and driving was accepted in the back country.
now we have faggotry pushing commies up there.... no need to be stable... might as well make it skinny and keep things sketchy and interesting

I got what you're saying but what I mean is I'm not made of money so I just need to take my time and find the best deals on stuff but I dont want to build it cheap and then just have to re-due it soon after when I break it. I wheeled a stock yota for a couple years and now I'm ready to build it up. I'm heading up to chico for school in the fall so I wont need to do much dirving. I'll be living right on campus and stuff. Anyway, I just want to know what to be looking for so when I see a good deal I can jump on it.
My advice is:
1. Keep your rig the way it is
2. Save your money
3. Wheel the crap out of your current rig
4. When you have enough money saved up sell the Cherokee and buy a real rig that has a frame!

Best advise yet.../\ /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ /\
The only thing I can add, is stop starting a new thread for every question you have... do a little bit of your own research, and learn a little bit.
Some of us have been doing this for years... trial and error... Thats how you learn.... posting every fucking question you have will only teach you that answer...... it won't teach you anything else that you need to know.
And you do need to know...
X3! Save your money. sounds to me with the questions your asking and stating that your on a budget multiple times that if you start it your going to be way over your head and not have time or funds to get it back together befor school.
And again like said above get on pirate4x4 and search!!!
I wheel and XJ and I am not rich. I found a D44 rear and ran it stock for a while, till I could scrape up the money for a lift wheels and tires. I just did 4.88 F & R and did some 35 spline shafts and a ARB in the rear.
I wheel the shit out of it when I can. I wont do anything to the D30 cause I want to change it out asap, but for now it works and I can go wheelin.
What I am trying to say is get a plan like they said figure out what size of tires you want to run and build it from there.
You could run a D44/9" and some decent sized tires for fairly cheap but its still not going to be a budget build.
I say build what you can with the money you have and wheel it till you can build it better. Its all part of the sport of wheelin, not many people build there junk once and call it good.

2. Save your money
3. Wheel the crap out of your current rig

Thats the reason I didnt buy a Cherokee and still dont have a rig today. If you would have waited you could have got a yota with what you have into the Cherokee and what you want to do with it.
Its sux but leave it or do small upgrades an just wheel it. You said you're going to be in Chico for school an wont have to drive all that much? So you dont plan on coming back to town at all, or driving it to any trails out here? Everything looks good on paper, but real life is not on paper. Lift it, get some 35s, some lockers maybe bumpers an sliders and call it good.
and watch out for all the dark people that have migrated to chico... You leave your rig "downtown" and it will get stolen... probably happen in your driveway as well... On my way out it got real bad up there~! o and while your at it, say goodbye to your liver.. there's something in the water
