What is everyones opinoin seeing as how Brenden just smoked his 7th trans {Cheesy}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By bigbadjeepster (bigbadjeepster) on 19th Feb 08 at 4:12pm
manual all the way! When I hit the gas all the power goes to the wheels! There is no slipping and heat build up. By the way my 92 cummins just blew the tranny. It should be out of the shop in the next day or so...$3400 later. WTF? POS auto.

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By BigRob (BigRob) on 19th Feb 08 at 6:26pm
I like em both, just depends on the situation. Smurf told me you need a big cooler and a good build and its all good for an Auto. The auto's are great in technical stuff, look at comp rigs now days! Manuel's are Bullet and Dummy proof. Don't know why Bren kill's em but my rig is heavier and has bigger meats and it's fine so far! Thanks smurf!!

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By Stangler (stangler) on 19th Feb 08 at 7:21pm
Gee, i would like to vote but my auto dosen't really work yet ....Hmmmmmmmm

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By BigRob (BigRob) on 19th Feb 08 at 8:22pm
Stan you should have ran the 909 or the 999

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By The General (highlakeswheeler) on 19th Feb 08 at 8:22pm
Depends on what your doing. Like Big Rob said the autos are good for the more tech parts of the trails and for comps. But what is the fun in that! Personally I will stick with the manual trans! {Grin}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By Sluice Sally (sluicesally) on 19th Feb 08 at 10:53pm
The have only driven manuals on the trail...So i don't know anything else::) My buggy we are building has auto and I'm a bit hesitant. I guess we'll see. People say i will like it better.

As of now..manual {Wink}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By T-CARP (admin) on 19th Feb 08 at 10:58pm
yup always been manual and new rig is gettin an auto, kinda curious how it will be, it seems to be the trend. {Smile}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By Sluice Sally (sluicesally) on 19th Feb 08 at 11:08pm
I wanted to have a manual...but the auto was free {Wink}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By T-CARP (admin) on 19th Feb 08 at 11:10pm

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By Sluice Sally (sluicesally) on 19th Feb 08 at 11:23pm
It's a T400........I got a pretty STaK to go with {Wink}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By The General (highlakeswheeler) on 19th Feb 08 at 11:42pm
my friend has a Scout on 42's and it has an auto trans and it slips all the time. im not sure what trans he is running but in his case it sucks. {Tongue Out}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By STEPHY5 (stephy5) on 20th Feb 08 at 10:03am
I think it depends on the situation as well....I have a manual in my rig, but my BF aka t-carp tells me i should switch to an auto, which we will see. But i think with manual its more of a challenge for me and i love that. If you are competing though, i would deff go with auto.

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By VERTIGO (vertigo) on 20th Feb 08 at 7:11pm
I like having an auto, so i dont spill my beer... {Grin} lol. . This last tranny was rebuilt.. but 2nd gear never felt right as soon as i put it in. It lagged bigtime... it tells me that the guy whom rebuilt it didn't do it right... I havnt driven it since the cal expo deal until 2 days ago i thought i'd go rip up and down the street a few times. well shifting it into 2nd, it held real high rpms until i let off, secondarys open of course... then it slowly eased into 2nd. So i dropped the pan today, and holy sh!t there was a lot of metal flake/sludge in there... I think 2nd gear band was almost gone. but o well. $300 im picking another one up friday. better stall converter, and about 8k miles on her... we'll see.
I think the first one was hurting because of no cooler, Original since 1978 and that was when i had major cooling issues with everything, so she ran at 250+ most of the time, and i changed her out before it dumped on me. wasnt exactly dead.
Autos are easy/simple, and now with the doubler, i love the damn thing. and yes 7 trannys in 10 years... lol... Erkel says i'm the only one he knows who has broken a gas peddle... woohoo!!!

Drive it like you stole it!!!

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By Sillyneck (sillyneck) on 20th Feb 08 at 8:14pm
I hate my auto.... I would have swapped it out already if I had any ambition to change what's still working. {Wink}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By Sillyneck (sillyneck) on 20th Feb 08 at 8:15pm
whoa... I'm a moderator too? Thanks for all the stars travis.

Yall better not f-ck around or I'll do some schnazzy intarweb sh!t cause I have supreme power {Cheesy}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By T-CARP (admin) on 20th Feb 08 at 8:17pm
haha hookin ya up buddy! Did you ever figure out the torque converter you have?

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By Sillyneck (sillyneck) on 20th Feb 08 at 8:27pm
hahah.... yea it's like a 200 rpm converter lol

I'm going to put the hot 350 in there w/ a 1500 stall. full manual valve body. art carr or sillyfab shifter.
that should make it fun {Smile}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By mikeb (mikeb) on 20th Feb 08 at 10:35pm
Ive ran both on the trail. . But the comparison needs to be stock auto vs. stock manual. I think the stick just gives far better control in all situations. Ive also driven Jimmy's TJ with a built T400 on the trail. Reverse manual valve body with compression braking does get it though. He had like a geezer in that tranny. Where I have like 100 in my stick.
Towing love my stick, even commuting in traffic it isn't that bad. The one thing though that I dont like is these antique truck 4spd suck for banging through gears. A NV4500 with an aftermarket short through stick would be sick on the trail and and in the sand and snow. Wish I had the scratch to through one in the heep.

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By T-CARP (admin) on 20th Feb 08 at 10:38pm
True, I just drive a stick for work and am tired of shifting. I do have 10 gears though. You think your 4sp is slow shifting {Cheesy} .
We shall see all I am going to do is a manual valve body and a 1500 stall converter in my C4. I just hope its not a mistake. Oh well my old trans is already gone {Rolleyes}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By BigRob (BigRob) on 20th Feb 08 at 10:44pm
mark my words you'll be stoked!

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By mikeb (mikeb) on 20th Feb 08 at 11:06pm
No shit i used to drive a two speed rear end at work and i would always get lost around 4hi or 5low

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By jON_P (jonp) on 20th Feb 08 at 11:20pm
I know a lot of these posts are from earlier but same as everyone else...it's all on preference i would say....my pops loves the autos and put im in all the land cruisers he's done.....but I love my choice of gears with my duel cases....... {Grin}

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By misfitcj (misfitcj) on 24th Feb 08 at 6:08pm

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By rockhog (rockhog) on 25th Feb 08 at 10:16am
Im down with the auto...but I like both and have wheeled both. My current set up a TH400 with a 203/300 doubler. Love it so far. Seems to have a gear for everything. Plus the tranny is on its 8th wheelin season with no issues at all. With the new 454 I ended up going with a 2500 stall because of the cam. If I did not have the doubler it would be too loose but in double low its sweet.

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By VERTIGO (vertigo) on 25th Feb 08 at 10:35am
I got my new tranny in a few days ago, shifts great, feels smooth, and i guess it has a 900 stall converter. I havnt put it in low low yet because i have a frozen brake caliper and can't bleed it. and its been raining... we'll see what happens...

Re: Auto vs Manual Trans - Posted By reebles (reebles) on 25th Feb 08 at 11:28am
I had a manual in the TJ and loved it. The Honcho has an auto, so when it is done, we will see how I like it.

AUTO is my vote.

needing to move the feet to shift kinda interupt the BJ and the shifter wood get in the way. Could never figure out how to drink a beer, hold the wheel and shift.
