Skool me on transmissions.
Why are most of you guys going with automatic transmissions?
With most automatics first gear at 2.65 to 1, where my NP-435 is 6.85 to 1. Will I have to be worried about my crawl ratio?
I have recently thought it would be nice to have an automatic, with my daughter get older. I would like her to start driving when she has the basic concept. And it would be a lot easier with an automatic transmission with a trans brake, so that I can stop it with a push of the button.
Thanks.
Teach her to drive a stick. I learned in my old mans 1941 Ford Flatfender when I was 10. Made me a better driver by the time I was of age.
Dont worry about the crawl ratio. Depending on the the torque converter you can easily double the final crawl number. In my last auto rig I could easily drive through the brakes at 70:1
Personally after I added up all the costs to make an auto into basically a manual tranny Isn't wasn't worth it. Then throw in the reliability factor and the stick won hands down. In four low, with a kid driving, the only shiftin would most likely be between first and reverse though.
True baggy but in comps you really need an auto...
I get that. But for a trail rig....By the way how that working out for you . :flipoff: I know what you mean.
all back together![]()

Thanks, I was thinking that the auto would be easier with a transbrake button. Also, I could throw it in park and we would stop. I can't throw the manual into nuetral and stop the truck.
Travis, are there any benefits for an auto on the trail.
of course, great for climbing, and like you said you can just pop it in park and its stopped. You can hold a "drink" and not have to shift. I love it! I had a manual in the old buggy, and was die hard manual guy, but now I wouldn't build a rig without an auto. And my c4 is tiny with the shorty ouput and adapter on it, you wouldn't have to change much, its probably the same length as your manual![]()
you dont need a transbrake.those are for drag cars to launch at certain rpms. those are bank as well. get an auto dude. buggys need autos. sticks are for full bodys and camping rigs.
last time i checked RG doesn't have a stick in his TT :flipoff:

Ya won't have anything else. My 14 year old has driven it and she loves it. And it's a bonus for the "I can hold a drink" thing.
i am runnin a standard th350. I had a stick in a Yota for awhile. but just having 2 pedals is worth it.
I simply dont trust the autos. Needed for blowing up sand hills, snow drifts, steep long climbs, yes.
Needed for backwoods trail use, no. I repair one manual trans for at least every 20 autos. What does that tell ya?

Is that due to improper use, installation? Not built for the application?
I can see just throwing a C4 in a buggy and having problems. Especially, compared to a manual transmission. But if proper cooling and the correct upgrades to an automatic transmission should last pretty long. Is that correct?
your 20-1 ratio, but i bet in the real world there is really 20-1 auto vs manuals out there. and does that include clutch replacements?
i am sticking with my auto fo sho.
face it, autos really suck. All it takes is for something like a pump gear to crack, and you are broke dick. Plenty of cooler, fancy clutches and sprags, straight cut planets, etc. will help make it last, but there are just too many parts to fail. Porous castings, valve bodies, gaskets blowing..... I could go on and on.
Ever see the inside of an NV4500? Ever see inside a THM 400?
I could dump the oil out of my trans, pour all the mustard, ketchup, and mayo from my hot dog lunch in my manual, and still drive home. If the clutch burned up, I could weld the input shaft to the flywheel and still get home.
Look at what happened to Travis at the hammers. Busted pump gear. DONE.
Calrocs, his gasket on the 2nd servo cover blew out. NO MORE 2ND.
Flexplates busting out around the crank bolts.... DONE. That aint gunna happen with my manual.
stripped input shafts DONE
planet torrington thrust bearings blowing up for fun and taking out planet sets DONE
band lugs busting off bands in high pressure apps DONE
bushing spinning and blocking off lube oil passages DONE
apply pistons cracking DONE
lip seals taking a shit DONE
busted cases DONE
pump seals pushed out of the pump DONE
converter stripping DONE
servo pin bores wearing and leaking off pressure DONE
snap rings in clutch packs disloging or breaking DONE
water in it DONE DONE
pressure regulator valves stuck in low position DONE
I could go on and on. If you guys see what I see everyday, you would run a manual in your trail rig if you dont have a trailer, and wheel in remote places.
Ask yourself, how many times you have been wheeling and someone was broke down because the manual trans they were using took a shit?
Ratchet strap the manual tranny back together and keep on wheeling.Try that with an auto .
I have striopped an input and couldn't get the torque converter off so I through the whole trans away and picked up another from J&W and went right back to wheelin.... that was the Jeep though Nowe I have a heavy ass blazer ands with a couple upgrades I have been just abusing that rig and the trans is still laughing its ass off.....![]()
I agree with the whole full body trail rig, I don't want to scratch my paint or dent my rig theory but if you really want to drive it like you stole it , like on its side in winch hill 1 or the box I think the auto's been great!! just my .02 cents and I really like both worlds, I do think manuels require/make you a better driver cause going to an auto from a manuel felt stupid easy!!,,,,,.......lol....![]()
Of course I had Keith build my junk and its been great which is alot more than I can say for Mobile trans in the OV who had to warranty the 4L60 they rebuilt for my old DD![]()
I'm a manual guy never owned an auto in a trail rig. I agree with Keith a manual is super reliable never have to worry about them on the trail and if your starter goes out you can always pop start the motor!
PS. you don't want to use a tranny break to stop any vehicle.

hahaha how would you know ?
junk yard turbo 400 factory 32 spline output![]()
and its a true auto no stupid manual valve body
never even changed the filter and it fucking laughs at neutral drops with a V-8
i have seen weak 7 hundos laugh at bunny hopping a biggie blazer in winch hill three but its been built rite !
Ford autos suck ass almost ass much as their gas motors stick with your manual , unless you are gonna stick a 4 hundo in it
well said Keith.
Throw a 400 in it and let her hit the Box. My buddy Jimmy's daughter a few years ago.
