Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By bwhit (bwhit) on 6th Mar 09 at 6:06pm
im running the northern ram 2"bore 8"stroke. Its been fine for 5 years now. I would def get the resuable hose stuff. That way if it should break your not fawked like i was in the snow!!!!!
Here is a link where baggy bought his lines from
http://www.discounthydraulichose.com/Reusable_Hose_Fittings_s/75.htm
and and i think all you will need after that is a auto tranny cooler from kragen and your good to go.

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By mikeb (mikeb) on 6th Mar 09 at 6:15pm
Being the cheap ass I am. I copied Bobs years ago. :

stock p- pump
used orbital from Acme truck in Stockton
cheap tranny cooler
cheap spin on 1 qt. filter and base from napa
single ended ram
steering colum from Northern ( but some d-shaft and a heim would work just as good)
quick disconnect for wheel
steering wheel found in a dumpster
http://www.discounthydraulichose.com/
I use these guys for all my rebuildable fittings and hose. Super cheap. I use R1 hose. Like a buck/ft. Good to 2000 psi. hydro hose has a saftey factor of 4 so I am not worried about blow a line behind a stock p-pump that only puts out around 1000 psi. ( I made an inline gauge and tested the pressure side if the pump. With the motor at idle and around 2000 rpms.)
Come look at mine if you want.

Not the best set up but I have been rocking it for almost 8 years now. Long before POS and PSC were around.

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By mikeb (mikeb) on 6th Mar 09 at 6:18pm

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By jiMMythejerk (jimmythejerk) on 8th Mar 09 at 7:34pm
What a day. got the cruiser outside and cleand up. drove it around for 20min. all was well till i noticd my PS leak progressd to a stream. ugg. back in the garage, pulld the box to snugg up the fittings and a nice crack in the front cap. sure i could fix it or even get the billet cap ( would have to notch more bumper) and still have the same steering. said fawk it and pulld it all off. going to fix the box later and trasfer the set up to the lil jeep.

hmm no wonder my winch suckd at times.

bye bye winch

me =welding master duh

well im at a stand still. need to commit to a ram plan.
10 in ram needs to be 8in.

do i?

-drink more
-buy 8in ram = 90$ (no)
-run a 2 in spacer on the outside
-run a 2 in spacer on the inside
-run a 1 in spacer on the outside and a 1in on the inside
-have 2 in cut off the shaft and re thred it.

where can 1 get spacers for a 1 1/8 shaft?

?

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By bkizzle (bkizzle) on 13th Mar 09 at 1:55pm
lookup hydro steering on the pirate board I know theres stuff in the toyota FAQ on it but there are a few write ups on stops for your ram, most run a little bit bigger ram than needed with stops, some just clamp around the shaft, theres a few different ideas on there

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By bkizzle (bkizzle) on 13th Mar 09 at 1:55pm
but more of :kranker: wouldnt hurt either

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By bigbadjeepster (bigbadjeepster) on 13th Mar 09 at 2:56pm
Have Trout machine up a 2" spacer to slide over the shaft.

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By mikeb (mikeb) on 13th Mar 09 at 3:00pm
I used to just drop a piece of tubing inside the ram

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By jiMMythejerk (jimmythejerk) on 14th Mar 09 at 9:19pm
made a 2 in spacer and had to put it inside the ram

got it all tackd in place and just have grind a lil more on 1 of the mounts

thanks to hengl for cutting and drillin.

should b burnin it on in the am.

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By mikeb (mikeb) on 14th Mar 09 at 9:32pm

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By jiMMythejerk (jimmythejerk) on 20th Mar 09 at 1:07pm
i use to run a large inline trany filter,(looked like big fuel filter)

but i orderd this mount and spin on filter.

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By mikeb (mikeb) on 20th Mar 09 at 8:04pm
I had to run a cooler after my spin on too straighten the fluid back out. The fluid leaves the spin on foamed up. The suction line back to my resevoir was only 2 ft long. It kept killing pumps. Foamed fluid doesn't like to be pumped. I added small tranny style cooler, to allow time for the foam to settle out. I imagine if the suction line was long enough the same thing would be accomplished.

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By jiMMythejerk (jimmythejerk) on 23rd Mar 09 at 7:22pm
all my crap came in, made filtr mount, lines and routed everything. really needed a 90 on 1 side of the ram, oh well

its settling right now after bleeding and 2 cycles, ill get it out of the garage tomorrow and test here, then maybe PC thurs...

no leaks,

Re: cheap full hydro steering - Posted By jiMMythejerk (jimmythejerk) on 9th Apr 09 at 2:39pm
UPDATE:

well after spining my pump dead at hammers i tore into it.
Image

my end cap had back all the way out of the piston housing, 2 treads left. {Shocked} i tossed the shim, put 2 washers in the bottom of housing, ground the limit stud, drilld out the main fitting and reinstalled.

BAM steering back and better than before.
