Wheelbase (2nd Oct 10 at 6:30am UTC)
Well trying to figure out where i wanna put my wheelbase on the cruiser. The green truck is about 118" and has served me well for as long as i wheeled it open front on the toyota axles. Where is everyone else running theirs at? Just looking for some ideas as well as some Pros and Cons.

The 113" seemed to be a goal of mine for awhile granted my jeep was like 98" and the blazer was 110" and this chassis i got from Goodby was 113" i am going to stretch it out a little so we will see if i can end up around 115"- 120" leaves me a little room to play with, should be more stable at speeds and climb well, just my .02 cents though

I am at 112", my last rig was at 115". I think if it is too short you are unstable. But can maneuver around objects, instead of going over them. If you are too long, it makes turning a lot of work. But makes it very stable. Overall, whatever suites your needs and wants,

The Rubicon is sittin at a solid 94 righ now, lol I'm looking forward to the 104 that will be coming soon.......and thats just in the rear. What axles are going under the cruiser and how wide? Also what size tire's?

I'm at 115" with my toyota. It will climb almost anything but the downside is it doesn't turn that well. Overall I'm very happy with my wheelbase! I would rather have a few backups and extra turns on the trail and have confidence in being able to climb!

ARB up front but the rear is welded so it pushes the rig a little. I have full hydro up front for steering but the way I have it set up it doesn't turn to full lock but I think it saves dana 44 shafts and u joints

just for fun I'm going to throw some physics at ya. The lower the vehicle the longer it acts, as far as climbing stability/potential go. The heavier the running gear, tires and wheels are... the longer it acts. for climbing... the further forward the weight is in relation to the centerline of the axle the better it is. A 90" wheelbase early bronco climbs a lot like a 105" jeep. Breakover angle is also something that dictates how the rig acts. 49's and a 100" wheelbase is like a stock sami 40's and 130" wheelbase is a fail. hogan's jeep works great at that wheelbase because he has it slammed to the earth so the sprung weight has much less mechanical advantage to flip the vehicle over than say a 6" taller same rig. what's the perfect setup for yours? there are a few variables but it all depends on where you put the axles. Yea you could go 118..... but it would be 'tarded if you moved nothing but the front axle forward or only the rear axle backwards.

i am not sure there is a "magic" number due to the fact like weight , tires, width, height, suspension, desert, rocks, belly height... etc.. i could list the possibilities but you get my point and already know where your going to put it anyways...lol

I have an idea of where i want to put it but for all i know im pissin in the wind, lol Ive been a leaf spring guy and now im goin to links. axles are gonna be 60 and 14 bolt tires - 40-42 engine - TBI 350 trans - thinin th400 or 700r4 still thinkin on the rest

with that recipe between 110 and 120 would be sufficient. closer to 110 w/ 40s... closer to 120 w/ 42s. unless it's going to be street legal etc.
