XJ Mystery Hose - Posted By OVkid (ovkid) on 17th Apr 10 at 3:29pm
I just got a 1989 XJ, 5 speed. Under the jeep there is a hose that comes from the top of the transmission and is just zipped tied up so it wont drag instead of going wherever its supposed to go. It leaks red (Trany Fluid) all over under the jeep and I am concerned about where that fluid should be going and what harm could possibly come due to the hose not being in place. The hose comes from the top of the transmission, down to a metal fitting with two metal nipples that currently do not have anything on them(this si where the fluid leaks out of) and then another long hose with a threaded metal fitting on the end. Does anyone have any idea where these go? I'm thinking its some kind of breather or somehting but I cant figure where it should be.
Thanks

A vent hose possibly? Do someone overfill the tranny?

I was thinking it might be some kind of vent hose but I cant figure out where the other end goes. Someone before me replaced the trany so I guess they forgot where it went so they just said screw it and zip tied it to the cross member.

Tranny vent hose, that bracket is supposed to be behind a bell housing bolt. Do yourself a favor and run a longer hose all the way up to the firewall behind the engine somewhere and zip tie it up. That way when your traversing water crossings you wont have water gettin in the tranny. And ya, make sure the tranny isnt overfull

ok, So are the two metal nipples or the threaded fitting at the end of the long hose supposed to be attached to anything?
And the trany and T-Case share the same fluid on XJ's right? So I guess I'll just drain the fluid and refil it to the right amount. I'm planning on changing all fluids in the jeep anyway since I dont know the service records and I dont trust previous owners.

The ends may have had some type of cover (hat) type thing to let them breath still but not let water in them. No worries, just dont cap them off.
Both take ATF

Ok, I think I'll just extend the lines up to the engine compartments and put some breather caps on them. Thanks for the help
