Ok I need some help. - Posted By kranker (kranker) on 20th Oct 10 at 7:58am
as some of you know i got Mikey's 63 caddy. Now i am fixing a head gasket problem and i need to get all new head bolts for it. It has a Cadillac 390 in it and it seems that nobody make a head bolt set for this motor.I have been online and called about a hundred place and i cant find any head bolts foe this thing. Now i have called APR and they want all kind of crazy measurements and its going to cost a arm and a leg to get them. I have a question....... Can i just go buy some grade 8 or higher bolts and put in there and call it a day{Confused} ?? Any help would be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if you use standard grade 8's get them non coated. just raw steal. i looked around too and everyone says swap to a 472/500. much cheaper to build.

I am not looking to swap just yet. The motor only has maybe 3000 on a rebuild. The head did not get re torqued after break in. That why the head gasket took a shit. If i did deiced to go with a no coated grade 8 bolt should i go higher to like a 10.9{Confused} ?

10.9 is a metric setting...if your worried ask danny for some cat bolts.

A bolt is a bolt. If that thing is a 63 than i would say the head bolts were not torque to yeild bolts ( throw away one use bolts). I would go to fastenal all and have them match them up. there should be makings on the top of the bolt that will tell ya the grade of the bolt. Or cross refference that motor and see what else it came in and find them in the junk yard. Im sure a 63 caddy would be hard as hell to find.

Thanks Rob but i have already called them and they had nothing for me. I even asked if they knew where to call to see if i could find them somewhere else and they said every shop they know of takes those motors out and junks them because everybody wants the 472 or the 500. I just got of the phone with a could of motor builders and they said i should be ok with a no- coated grade 8 bolt. I will be giving fastenal a call on my lunch. Thanks everybody. Smiley Smiley
