Making the club work - Posted By coalitioncrawler (coalitioncrawler) on 25th May 09 at 1:39pm
Hello All, First post here.
Had a couple questions on your club and how you guys make everything work. I ask becuase I am heading a local club here in salinas Ca.
1, How did you establish your intial members?
2.What defines a member from someone who is always around, ie: on the trips at the partys ect.
3. Whats the process by which people become prospect and then members.
4. Are you a non profit? How do you handle money for purchasing shirts ect.
5. Who gets a shirt/hat ect, are they different for members vs. fans if availble.
I ask becuase I have seen a few of you on the trail and read alot about your club and it is always positive. Your club also has a definte prestige to it. This is something im trying to accomplish for our club.
Thanks Ryan

I am not a member, but I know a way to help. Either do del albrights online corse or take his VLLS training thru RTF. That will show you the best way to organise a club and run trail rides. Tell him I sent you and he will give you a discount on the online course. The VLLS course is by invite only, but if you are serious about it, let me know and I can nominate you.
From what I know about the zombies, what makes their club work is just straight good people. that is the first thing you want to keep in mind.

I'm proud to say I was around when the club was started. There was a core group of us that pretty much wheeled and or partied every weekend. Big Rob and Jereme Dick were the creators of the club. Started as a name and a symbol. Rolled into stickers and shirts. everyone paid for their own stuff for the most part. The early initiations were completed in the bar more than anything else. there weren't as many yahoos in the game at the time so it wasn't hard to know or figure out who was an asset. Over time it rolled into a series of more strict initiations and a longer pledge period because the core group was already established and rather than needing members, people wanted to join and had to make sure they were worthy,
I'd say just begin as a group of friends. make sure decisions are as close to mutual as possible so as to reduce friction. Money is the biggest problem for any club so lay out some ground rules and stick to them or do it as we do. There's not really any way to get paid just being a club member so there isn't really a way for anyone to feel "screwed".
We're all really good friends so nobody really causes any problems. Haven't had anything too major to deal with as a result so it's been pretty smooth,
not sure if that helps... maybe I'll add more when I sober up. welcome to the board!

good stuff here. Thanks for all the insight, it sounds as though we are on the right track. We are in the process of becoming cal 4wd and joining with the blue ribon coalition. Kurt thank you I will look into the VLLS coarse.
Onee last question can you buy a Rock Zombies shirt if you are not a member or is this reservered for members only. I ask becuase I feel that only members should wear our logo as not to be miss represented by some asshat with 30 bucks who bought a sweatshirt. Thanks again Ryan

I have been in and around 4x4 clubs for a while.
One thing I notice that is a really good idea is that the people trying to get in the club go on at least one or two wheelin trips with the club just to make sure you dont let someone in who drives like a jerk and tears up the land. Make sure you can trust them to represent your club on the the trails.
If you ever choose not to allow someone in your club, call them at home or talk to them outside the meeting. This will lessen the chances of someone getting upset or embarrassed and causing a scene. Same goes for kicking someone out.
Like Sillyneck said money is almost always an issue with clubs, so be open and honest with the finances. Don't spend money with out it being a club decision.
Sorry if this is stating the obvious, just trying to throw out a few things from my experience with 4x4 clubs.
