 I believe that  a Toyota pickup is a good entry level  vehicle for some one who is unsure if they want to be a wheeler, or if this sport is really for them.  Weld the rear, throw in a Marlin,( one of the coolest guys I have ever met on the trail) begin wheeling at 7000 rpm's, and forgetting that your transmission has multiple gears....  But if you want to be famouse it is going need  a V8 to get it done.

whats wrong with a welded rear?  Mine is done by fishmouth and i wanted to put it on the coffee table instead of in the 14 bolt, cause it is so damn sexy!!  {Grin}   Thanks Dan.

Re: Why not Toyota? For mikeb - Posted By yeagley (yeagley) on 6th Jul 09 at 5:18pm
Entry level?  Some of the baddest rigs I have ever seen have been toyotas with 4 cylinders. Dont be a hater because your toyota 15 years ago broke alot. Im not attacking you. I do like your Jeep. Its not the same old yuppy mobile with all the bolt on doo dads. I have never gone over 5000 rpm in my Yota, shit ive never wheeled with a daul case. I go everywhere all the big boys go. True, ive never made it through the box, but that was because my stock t-case X member was dragging and I couldnt go any further, but I put on a hell of a show trying. I know last rocktober fest my entry level toyota 4runner kept me dry all night while it poured rain.

Well Id have to have it street legal to drive it there and back. Welding the rear would make it slide on turns and wear down the tires wouldnt it?

Dont weld the rear if your gonna street drive it hell I dont even like in on the trail sometimes with my longer wheelbase, go with a auto locker like a detroit or the lunchbox style that goes in your stock carrier, an ARB would be the choice ticket if you can spend the money on one open on the road and locked when needed will save your tires big time too!

Re: Why not Toyota? For mikeb - Posted By mikeb (mikeb) on 6th Jul 09 at 8:55pm
Ya Detroits are for the street for sure.  Tire wear isn't as bad as everyone makes it out.

Toyota 4 cylinders work just fine, mines been thru it all and works great for me. V8's do sound way cooler though ill give you that.

welded tire wear sucks I can vouch for that after 1000 miles you can tell that the rears are wearing unevenly since right hand turns are sharper at least detroits ratchet they have a little give but open is the way to roll on the pavement

i am not a huge toyota fan... but for the money they flat out work.  there are so many parts available for them now that you could put a nice one together with little fab skills.  i would say its a great choice for a started rig.

Toyota is fine for more than "entry level" {Rolleyes}

Mine has been everywhere the "big boys"  have been, and it's still on Toyota axles, leafs, single T-case etc...You don't need an LS-1, coilovers, links, and 42+ tires to get it done. I personally like getting more done with less...(my life story... {Grin} )  anyone can walk through the box with the bling...lemme see you do it on the smaller shit without bling and now I'm impressed.

The only two things that have stopped me are backdoor and the waterfall on wrecking ball. This is only because of wheelbase and fuel management.  Extend my front axle 3 more inches and add fuel injection and I'm good to go.

Toyota is fine, don't be a hater. :flipoff:

Of course now that I've said this someone will point out that  I'm building a linked buggy with a chevy V6 and bling...

So, its been "everywhere" the big boys have been, except...insert list here:.........

Kinda doesn't make sense huh??  I am not saying that Toyotas suck...just not my choice.....but don't say they will go "everywhere" when obviously they don't:flipoff:

Mine will just need to actual get to the hammers to do some of the harder spots I got denied in the box my first attempt due to a lame ass spare 3rd with a limited slip that wouldnt keep my front locked in someone elses lame ass gear oil spill covered up in dirt and I lost the "AAA driveshaft" weld on the rear but Ill be back in a few weeks with my front locker back in, I did soup kitchen with the lame limited slip so Toyotas cant be that bad :flipoff: just gotta drive em' or smash em' however you like, I will say though there is a lot of toyotas on the trail that give other ones bad names, with some backyard tweeker engineering

I like my toy! dollar for dollar against the big boys it will do, not saying there better but they can hang
