cold starting issues - Posted By bigbadjeepster (bigbadjeepster) on 11th Jun 09 at 6:39am
WTF? I cant seem to pinpoint this problem on my cruiser. OK, the engine is a stock TBI 350. Every morning when I try to start the engine it just cranks over and never fires. It has good spark and 12v to the coil while cranking. When the temperature outside warms up, the engine starts fine. Crazy huh? With the engine running I have 15psi at the throttle body. Timing is set at 0deg with the tan wire disconnected. No codes are present on the OBD port.
So far I have replaced:
ignition module
cap
rotor
spark plugs
plug wires
fuel pump
distributor
IAC

think about if your temp senser is malfutioning and not sensing cold it could be fking with your computer

A temp sensor would most likely trigger a code. ECM needs to know when to go into closed loop, and if not sensing would set a type of code like engine takes to long to operating temp or similar.

Have you hooked up a fuel psi gauge before starting, when problem is actually happening? Possible fuel draining back to the tank? Then psi builds back up and fires? Are the injectors leaking?

Manifold vacuum? 14"-22" HG

UHM{Confused} How is the spray pattern of the injectors?

I am pretty sure a coolant temp sensor failes to open. It allows the engine to start when cold, after it warms up though it acts like a stuck choke, and floods the engine out. Atleast mine did.

I changed the dist yesterday thinking the magnetic pickup was faulty. No go.
Fuel pressure at throttle body is 15psi with engine on or off.
Im going to jump the obd port again and see if a code comes up.

OK I just read the computer and got a code 42. Ignition Control (IC) Circuit.
Is the code 42 from when I had the tan wire disconnected setting the timing?

Re: cold starting issues - Posted By bigbadjeepster (bigbadjeepster) on 23rd Jun 09 at 12:08pm
fuel spray pattern is even from both injectors while cranking.

Just talked to another guy here in the shop, says that if the coolant temp senser is stuck at say 220'ish the PCM wont allow enough fuel to spray from the injectors on cold start. Try unplugging the coolant temp senser and try starting it with "cold" conditions.

Code 42 is a electronic module code of some sorts

module is new. I even changed it with another one when I replaced the distributer. Could the coil be poopy?

It is the electronic control module or it could that wire that you unhook to set the timing.

If you got a dizzy with a lifetime warranty I would take it back. The first one i got was not right and then I got a second one and it worked well. It is a rebuilt one?

Re: cold starting issues - Posted By Yo Boom (just2much19) on 23rd Jun 09 at 3:32pm
Also I am assuming the new dizzy came with a new pickup coil right?

Re: cold starting issues - Posted By bigbadjeepster (bigbadjeepster) on 23rd Jun 09 at 10:44pm
yea, new pickup coil and another module. The dist is a rebuilt one from napa.

OK, I disconnected the CTS this AM and still no start. I took off a plug wire to check spark one more time, grounded it out and VROOM! Fired up. Must me something in the ignition {Unsure}

Man, with not being able "eye fuck" what you got goin on there, hard to diag it through this

Re: cold starting issues - Posted By Yo Boom (just2much19) on 24th Jun 09 at 8:58pm
Did you check all the volt readouts?

Re: cold starting issues - Posted By Sillyneck (sillyneck) on 25th Jun 09 at 7:45am
you've got a wire loose on your voltage recirculation unit.
