Rig advice - Posted By kurtuleas (kurtuleas) on 5th Sep 08 at 8:14am
I gotta figure out what I am gonna do.

I have had my POS YJ since buying it new in '93, and unfortuantely I love it to death and can't part with it..

It can walk the Con no problem right now, but it's fawking falling apart.

I have got to decied if I am gonna drop it off at Phil and Trout's throw more money at it (Like I have any $$) OR just go and try to buy a rig that's already built.

The downsides:

1. Totally underpowered 4 banger

2. Polished turd rear end boat anchor (I do have a waggy 44 at Eric's though)

3. Body is hot from the body lift I put in when I first got it. If I roll it again the body may just tear from the frame.

4. Bullet hole ridden tailgate will not hold a spare.

5. It's not big enough to haul gear AND the wife and kids. On winter trips, it's a bitch just to carry what I need in the back of it.

6. Transmission is a POS with a internal slave that has gone out 10+ times. And now, I have no 5th gear.

SO, should I just keep what I got, and throw money at it OR buy an already biult rig?

I am think a four runner to haul beer, wife, and kids.

Dont get rid of the Barbie Jeep ! {Tongue Out} I know i got to figure out something too. Cant keep driving the peej everyday. Could you barrow a vehicle from someone and have the silly and fishy work on it...or just buy something new anyway and turn the jeep into something extreme..yeaaaaa :thumbsup:

Get one of them 4 door jobbies. Sorry not up on the body codes. After I quit Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep after 9 years I haven't looked back.

You are assuming an already built rig is not going to have it share of problems.

Screw the tail gate. Have the boys put a 2x4 bumper on it and a swing out carrier. Mine has a rack on it that pulls off and turns into a camp table.

Put in the 44, and find another for the front.

Build or get a small trailer. They are easy to pull through the trail

I can fix the 5th gear.....(quit lugging it in 5th. AX5 does not like that!)

Gear it so it does not matter what motor you have in it.

Have them tie the cage into to frame, then the body wont fall off.

You will NEVER have enough room in your rig. If you have more room, you will just bring more shit. Just like having a lot of money. You always seem to find a way to go into debt anyway.

I am already running 4:88's and a 4-1 T-case...

but I worry that if I throw that 44 in and put some 35's on it, the tranny will take a shit, AGAIN Smiley

If I keep it, i am gonna HAVE to get a trailer for it....

Re: Rig advice - Posted By Keith (psmurfbeotches) on 5th Sep 08 at 2:01pm

Re: Rig advice - Posted By kurtuleas (kurtuleas) on 5th Sep 08 at 2:49pm
Well, that would mean I would have to find a front Waggy 44 to match the rear..

New gears and lockers...

Go SOA, which means dumping the RE springs I got for somethin flatter..

A new streeting box, if I can fawkin remove the welded on POS that I got now..

New tranny

Tube work to tie the cage into the frame

More tube work to get the ass end I want..

Shit, i may as well comp cut the ass end and extend the WB{Confused}

Aw fawk. I gotta start playing the lotto {Grin}

Re: Rig advice - Posted By STEPHY5 (stephy5) on 5th Sep 08 at 5:08pm

Re: Rig advice - Posted By kranker (kranker) on 5th Sep 08 at 5:26pm

Re: Rig advice - Posted By bigbadjeepster (bigbadjeepster) on 5th Sep 08 at 6:05pm
Dude we have all been there on making a decision weather to keep or build another. Just keep the damn thing a quit your bitching. For those of us that arent made of money, it takes a while to build it the way you want to. Shit, Ive had mine for over 14 years and Im still adding to it.

Your has the six in it though right Steph?

Re: Rig advice - Posted By T-CARP (admin) on 5th Sep 08 at 9:50pm
Yup, she has the six banger, tired as hell!!! It has 230k on it, I am lookin for a new motor to put in soon, hers is smog exempt so the sky's the limit {Grin} Her dads 44 won't work for you wrong side drop, she has 5.38's in her diffs and it is fine on the freeway.

As for yours I think you should hang on too it, maybe tilton can get a front waggy 44 from J&W for ya. And as far as springs I have some RE rear TJ springs you can have, get 4 heims and 4 bushings and link up the rear on the cheap, I will help labor wise where ever I can down at SNAFU to help keep the costs down. When Phil gets back from texas talk to him he is from chico and used to being flat broke and building a rig {Cheesy}

hers is smog exempt

How is it smog exempt? What county does her parent's live in? Or what county is it regesterd in? That is the only way I know how to get somthing exempt.

Kevin

Re: Rig advice - Posted By HOGAN (hogan) on 6th Sep 08 at 11:08am
They live in Clear Lake {Wink}

Re: Rig advice - Posted By Donkey (norcalzukini) on 6th Sep 08 at 2:55pm
An AX-15 is a direct bolt in auto tranny. Killer tranny's, never see them here at work come in for anything wrong. In 10 years with Jeep/Dodge I have replaced one PRNDL switch. They are bullet proof, just like any auto trans, gotta keep them cool, so add a aux. trans cooler.

As far as rig size VS. family size. I had the same dilema few years back with a Samurai. Unloaded the Samurai and built a 4 runner. Then found out that the family didnt want to go anyways so sold it and got a Toyota truck. Hind sight? would have kept the Samurai and built the bitch {Tongue Out}

Re: Rig advice - Posted By dangerranger (dangerranger) on 19th Sep 08 at 4:34pm

The AX-15 is NOT an auto trans! It is the stock 5spd behind the 4.0L straight 6.

YES IT WILL!!!!!!....kinda. you will need to find a bellhousing from 96-00 Dodge Dakota with the 2.5L. With that bell it WILL bolt directly to the ax-15 :thumbsup:

You also have the option of using a toyota 5spd and toyota cases also. There are some mix and match parts needed but its all junkyard parts

T-carp here is the Engine swap bellhousing guide that i was talking about one day at Trout's shop http://www.jeeps-offroad.com/showthread.php?t=4740
